🌹 Hazrat Usman-e-Ghani (RA): The Martyr of the Qur'an
The Light of Modesty, The Man of Generosity
Hazrat Usman ibn Affan (رضی اللہ عنہ), the third Caliph of Islam and one of the Asharah Mubasharah (ten promised Jannah), was a man of unmatched modesty, humility, and generosity. A nobleman from the Quraysh tribe, he accepted Islam at the hands of Hazrat Abu Bakr Siddiq (RA) and was among the earliest converts.
Titles and Virtues
- 🕋 Zun-Nurayn (The Possessor of Two Lights) — because he married two daughters of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, first Ruqayyah (RA) and after her passing, Umm Kulthum (RA).
- 📖 Compiler of the Qur’an — During his caliphate, he ordered the standardization of the Qur’an into one dialect (Qurayshi), preserving its unity and authenticity.
- 💎 Generous to the Core — Donated hundreds of camels, gold, and silver during the Battle of Tabuk and purchased the well of Rumah to provide free water to Muslims.
His Caliphate
Hazrat Usman (RA) ruled for about 12 years (644–656 CE), the longest reign among the first four rightly guided caliphs. The first half of his caliphate was peaceful and prosperous, marked by expansion of the Islamic empire into North Africa and Central Asia. The second half, however, faced political unrest and internal conspiracies.
The Tragic Martyrdom
In 35 AH (656 CE), rebels, misled by fitnah (discord), surrounded his house in Madinah. Despite repeated calls for help, he refused to allow violence for his protection, fearing bloodshed in the city of the Prophet ﷺ.
🔸 On 18th Dhul-Hijjah, Hazrat Usman (RA) was reciting the Qur'an when the rebels broke in and martyred him brutally. His blood fell on the page of the Qur’an near the verse:
"فَسَيَكْفِيكَهُمُ اللَّهُ ۚ وَهُوَ السَّمِيعُ الْعَلِيمُ"
(Surah Al-Baqarah, 137)
"So Allah will suffice you against them, and He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing."
His Legacy
Hazrat Usman (RA) left behind a legacy of piety, patience, and sacrifice. His role in preserving the Qur’an and strengthening the Islamic state remains one of the most profound contributions in Islamic history.
A Silent Hero
He faced slander with silence, rebellion with patience, and martyrdom with the Qur’an in his hands. Indeed, Hazrat Usman-e-Ghani (RA) is a symbol of humility and sacrifice — a martyr who died for unity, with the Word of Allah on his lips and in his heart.
